Applying for Benefits

After filling out your paperwork, you will be scheduled to make an initial assessment with a GENEX representative, who will actually help you apply for Social Security disability with you by asking you questions about your disability, medicines, and physicians over the phone. You will be mailed a copy of your application to confirm that the information is correct, to be signed and sent to your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.

The medical determination of disability will be made by an agency of your state government that has a contract with the SSA. These agencies are staffed by teams which consist of one doctor and one non-medical professional, called a "disability examiner." This team will evaluate your claim and make a decision. This opinion will be adopted by the SSA, and you will be notified of the ruling.

GENEX will assist you in applying for benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA). It will be necessary for your physician to verify the information you include in the application, confirming that the disabling condition will last 12 months or longer. It is the Disability Determination Service (DDS) in your state of residence that determines whether you meet the standard for disability. A decision could take as long as 4-5 months.
